A dark and gritty roleplaying experience, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 is the sequel to the original Bloodlines game. You will play as a newly sired vampire, out to establish their own clan within the chaos of post-revolution Los Angeles. With each passing night, your thirst grows stronger, and you must feed to survive. To complicate matters further, you're not alone; every other vampire in L.A. is out for your blood, and they'll stop at nothing to get it. The game was built upon the original "" engine that powered "". This could be considered to be an enhanced version of that engine because it really did have the bugs removed and there was a lot more content in this game than its predecessor. The current state of the game has been upgraded greatly since then, but it is still based on "". "Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2" was released on March 30, 2003 by Troika Games.
The game was initially criticized for its gameplay, which some reviewers called "incoherent", lacking in direction and having little exposition about the role-playing aspects. In an attempt to fix these flaws, Troika released a patch shortly after the game's release that modified many aspects of gameplay: balancing combat and disciplines on both sides, completely redid the control and camera systems and added both the tutorial and journal. The journal was supposed to contain more information on some of the quests and characters, but it didn't work as intended. The next patch, 1.2 (released on July 15, 2003), added a number of new features such as basic clan management (with options such as creating ghouls), new disciplines (Mind Sphere abilities) and new Quests; some old bugs were also fixed. Shortly afterwards, on October 14, 2003, a new patch was released with a number of new features such as Weapon upgrades and more clan management options. It also added the option to choose a male or female character at the start of the game, and some old bugs were fixed. The last patch released for this game was 1.2b on March 10, 2004, which added a number of new features such as a basic character creator and a ton of tweaks for combat balances on both sides. Troika's next game, "", was created using the "Bloodlines 2" engine.
"Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2" received "generally favorable reviews", according to the review aggregation website Metacritic. Some reviewers praised the game for its focus on crafting, but others were critical of Troika's decision to make it a role-playing game at first before adding action elements.
